Day 7 – The Reason for Everything

Now we end this exploration of purpose as we started… remembering that it is not about us.

It’s not about me but about Him – Christ Jesus.

For everything comes from God alone.
Everything lives by his power,
and everything is for his glory.

Romans 11:36

This is such an important point that I do think it is worth circling back to, albeit from a different angle. If it’s not about me, the next logical question is then who?

The answer:
It’s all about HIM. It’s all about God. I mean it seems almost arrogant to be surprised by that answer… but we often live as though we aren’t aware of this truth. It’s easy to do, to be self-focused, to be driven by our goals and aspirations, to seek our comforts and successes, to make life about us.

So it is worth repeating, again and again,
It’s all about Jesus.

But what exactly does that mean? What does it look like to live a life that is all about God?

It means reordering our lives so that everything we do is for God’s glory – not our own. Everything we do is as a reflection of God. Everything we do, we do to honor Him, to declare who He is, to praise Him — to bring Him glory.

Warren shares a challenging point:

In the entire universe, only two of God’s creations fail to bring glory to Him: fallen angels (demons) and us (people).

All sin, at its root, is failing to give God glory.

The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren

I had to read that a few times for it to really sink in. We all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory – His intended purpose in creating us. (Isaiah 43:7; Romans 3:23)

Everything God created continues to bring Him glory from the moment He spoke it into existence. The earth continues to spin on its axis, the sun continues to “rise” and “set,” the waves continue to crash and recede, the birds continue to fly, the seasons continue to change, — every bit of creation continues to reveal God’s craftsmanship, creativity, and power.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.

Day after day they continue to speak;
night after night they make him known.

They speak without a sound or word;
their voice is never heard.

Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
and their words to all the world.

Psalm 19:1-4

How can I bring God glory?

Jesus is our example of how to live a purpose-driven life. He says of Himself “If you have seen me you have seen the Father.” (John 14:8-11) — I mean talk about revealing God and bringing Him glory!

What did Jesus do?
1. Jesus perfectly imitated God. (John 5:19-21)
2. Jesus obeyed God and lived fully in submission to Him. (Luke 22:42)
3. Jesus loved God’s people unconditionally. (John 15:9-17; Romans 5:8)

Even reading this, I realize that to live a life that reflects Jesus’ is a high call. For me, this brings even more meaning and joy to all that Jesus did for us when he chose to die in our place on the cross. Through His death, Jesus not only reconciled us to God but also enabled us to live out our purpose.

Wow. What a great and mighty God He really and truly is.
